Skins is gone. Fuck yes. Now we only have to get rid of ITV, X Factor, Nandos, Chinos, Essex, Cameron, Hollister, etc to restore the UK’s IQ…
Actually nah that’s beyond repair. Still kids might stop trying to fit a “cool” stereotype to an extent and do something better… Probably not they’ll just turn over to ITV for MTV. “LETZ TAKE DRUGS COZ IT WAZ ON SKINZ LOL!”

teenage lesbians awkwardly figuring out their sexuality. an accurate portrayal of developing psychosis. asperger’s syndrome. a sociopath learning how to interact with the world without doing it too much harm. a non-hysterical but also non-positive or glamorous portrayal of a teacher having inappropriate feelings towards a student. a teenager caring for a grandparent with dementia. kids figuring out how to deal with their parents having an affair or their parents’ marriage breaking down. the way that violence and anger can run unchecked in a family and hand damage down from generation to generation, and how to stop it. how vast the class divide can be and how both sides of it can be just as fucked up and impossible to deal with. anorexia. complex and varied suicidal feelings. hereditary illness, teenage deaths and the aftermath of them for the kids left behind. the death of a parent. poisonous family dynamics and how complicated they can actually be despite how simple they may appear. selective mutism. the interaction between religious beliefs and homosexuality. a teenager caring for a disabled parent. genderqueer. bisexuality. dealing with a parent addicted to prescription drugs. a non-hysterical portrayal of teenage pregnancy.
and a hundred other things that are harder to explain in just one sentence. lost kids, frightened kids, betrayed kids, fucked up kids, kids doing the best they can. accurate portrayals of real feelings, things people need to see on television because they need to identify with them, because they need to know they’re not alone. that someone else knows what it’s like to feel like that.
I’m okay with the show closing - that’s not my point. my point is that it was and has always been a show that needed to be made, that was full of things that people needed to see - desperately, desperately needed to see, things that I needed to see, that my friends needed to see. I’m not defending it because I’m a fan, I’m defending it because there are parts of my life in that show, things I never thought I would see on television and have never seen anywhere else, and the same holds true for a lot of the people I love, and I wish I could ever end angry posts with some sort of dazzling final statement but this one like most of them is just going to dissolve into me saying ‘fuck’ at my computer a lot.
